Frequently Asked Questions
What is The One Room?
The One Room is a small, community-based learning program that blends strong academic foundations with personalized, hands-on learning. Students learn in a mixed-age environment with a focus on independence, collaboration, and real-world skills.
Is this a homeschool program or a private school?
We offer both options:
- A Full-Time Program with in-person learning and guided at-home support
- A Homeschool Enrichment Program that complements your existing homeschool
Families can choose the option that best fits their needs.
What grades do you serve?
We serve students in Kindergarten through 12th grade in a mixed-age learning environment.
What does a typical day look like?
Students rotate through a variety of learning experiences, including:
- Science and STEM
- History with integrated reading and writing
- Art and creative projects
- Career exploration
- Collaborative and independent work
Our schedule is structured but flexible, allowing for deeper learning when students are engaged.
How is student progress measured?
We do not use traditional report cards. Instead, progress is tracked through:
- Individualized learning goals
- Teacher observation and feedback
- Student work and portfolios
- Reflection and discussion
This provides a more complete picture of each student’s growth.
What is expected from families?
The One Room is a collaborative community. Families are encouraged to:
- Communicate regularly
- Support their child’s learning at home
- Participate in the community when possible
For full-time students, families also support at-home learning during the week.
How many students are enrolled?
We intentionally keep enrollment small (typically a maximum of 25 students) to maintain a close-knit, supportive environment where each child receives individual attention.
Do you follow a set curriculum?
We use a flexible, multi-level approach. While we have structured subject areas and yearly themes (such as biology or ancient history), learning is adapted to each student’s level, interests, and goals.
What if my child is advanced? Will they be challenged?
Yes. Students who are ready for more advanced work are given opportunities to go deeper, explore topics in more detail, and move ahead at their own pace.
Our flexible model allows students to be both supported and challenged.
What if my child is behind or needs extra support?
Because our program is personalized, students are able to work at their own level. We meet students where they are and help them grow with support, encouragement, and appropriately challenging work.
There is no pressure to “keep up” with a rigid pace—progress is based on readiness.
How is this different than a traditional classroom?
nstead of:
- Large class sizes
- One-size-fits-all instruction
- Standardized pacing
We offer:
- Small group learning
- Personalized instruction
- Flexible pacing
- Hands-on, meaningful experiences
How do I know if this is the right fit for my child?
The best way to find out is to connect with us. We’ll meet with your family, learn about your child, and talk through your goals to determine if The One Room is a good fit.
